Bishop’s Stortford is an historic
market town situated in the county of Hertfordshire,
UK. The population currently stands at approximately
34,000. About two miles away over the Essex border
lies London’s third airport, Stansted
Stortford has undergone
a dramatic increase in size over the last 20 years,
with the number of houses in the town increasing by
more than 65%. Yet more development is being proposed,
despite the fact that it is unnecessary and is being
targetted unfairly on Bishop’s Stortford. Only
strong and active opposition will halt Stortford’s
headlong expansion and prevent the town’s roads
and amenities from becoming further overburdened.Best
accomodation for stay in Stortford is Stansted
Guest House.
Local residents’
associations, the Civic Society and other groups in
the town have formed a campaign committee to fight this
development. The CAUSE committee includes members of
local residents’ associations, local councillors
and concerned citizens.
It lies along the River Stort on the northeast
periphery of the metropolitan complex centred on London.
In Norman times the manor was held by the bishop of London.
The town developed only after the opening of the Stort
Navigation in 1769, when it became a malting centre and
grain depot. The town is largely residential, with a variety
of schools and colleges. Cecil Rhodes was born at Netteswell
House, now a memorial museum
